Scheduled workshops

In this workshop, students of all skill levels, even those with no prior experience, will learn how to make electrical circuits and how to program software (“coding”). The workshop will provide the basic materials and instructions. By the end of the workshop, everyone will have made an electrical circuit, using very simple components such as cardboard, wires, and a light that they will be able to turn on and off. Depending on their skill level and rate of progression, most participants will also learn some basic coding. This will allow them to activate their light circuit using software they programmed themselves.

There will be progressively more challenging projects within the workshop, starting with one that everyone can do (even with no experience). The first project will be to create a circuit pathway on a piece of cardboard that will connect a wire from a battery to a light (LED). This will demonstrate the basics of electricity (powering a light), circuits (wiring pathways), and components (battery, light). A second project will build on the first, by using a special circuit board to replace the cardboard. This special circuit board will also connect the battery to the light, and to a second light. The lights will be controlled by a very small beginner-level computer program, which students will be taught how to create. To make the project more interesting, the two lights will serve as “eyes” for a model robot head. Finally, for the most advanced part of the workshop (which not every student may reach), we will add a further component, a motion sensor, to the circuit board. This will also require some more advanced coding, which will also be taught. The sensor will allow the robot eyes (lights) to turn on when motion is detected near the robot head.

Workshop organizer: Itä-Suomen yliopisto, eCraft2Learn-projekti

Have you ever thought how an internal combustion engine familiar from cars and other vehicles actually works? Can you tune your motor to output more power than your friend's engine? In this workshop, you can explore and construct your own engine with step-by-step guidance and material in the interactive JS-Eden modelling environment.

In the workshop, you can also explore other construals available in JS-Eden, and build for example your own version of famous Whack-a-mole game

Workshop organizer: CONSTRUIT! -projekti

Despite the name of this workshop, a dog is not needed. Instead, an instinct of a dog helps, as well as local knowledge. Using technical utilities is allowed and even necessary. Orienteering happens outside and it lasts 30-60min depending on the difficulty level.

Workshop organizer: Machine Learning Group - School of Computing - UEF
